Online shopping isn’t going away anytime soon, so it’s time to do it right. Large corporations are not taking into account the environmental impact that their packaging, shipping and returns are doing to our planet. While studying at art school, sourcing materials that caused little environmental impact was a challenge, but morally, it felt right to do my bit and it made making creatively more challenging yet fun. Now naturally, I feel opposed to buying new shiny products that have no regard for our planet and prefer to opt in to spending my money on environmentally thought out products or recycled goods. Therefore, I wanted to build a website that encapsulated every good environmental product under the same roof so that browsing for clothes or gifts or anything could be done in an environmental friendly way instead.

I know I’m guilty of tearing open packages in excitement and then throwing all the excessive plastic waste in the bin, but it doesn’t feel great. An example is this; a standard egg cup is delivered to a customer, produced by a mainstream retailer, and the size of the box is 40x greater than the size of the egg cup itself. Within the box also contains plastic, bubblewrap or cardboard waste materials stuffed to the brim to satisfy to the customer that the plastic egg cup, sealed in plastic airtight packaging has not been damaged in the soft cardboard box. Non sensical packages like this make coming up with a planned eco-friendly alternative creates feel-good buying while also taking some of the weight off of our lovely environments. OOKEE’s overall aim is to make it easier to do things right.
