OOKEE is proud to show off our all of our projects, no matter how little or meaningful. But this project is especially little, as it is for the bees! The founder of organisation OOKEE began her project ‘More Wild Flowers’ as a community project to run alongside their graduate degree show at art school. It was intended to show how our cities and continued property development in our natural green spaces are impacting habitats for important little creatures that our ecosystem depends on. Not only that, but our focus on aesthetics in environments is effective of their habitats too, like spraying pesticides to keep farm roads more tidy and neat is making our green spaces less habitable and more toxic for our flying little creature friends. There’s healthier solutions for our aesthetics, considering our own food chain is dependent on all these creatures of all sizes. Creatures as little as bees to pollinate our flowers and help our food grow, or spiders who are the kings & queens of food security, keeping all the bugs at bay.
It’s important to note that introducing flora species to a wild area should be native wildflowers to said area, so it’s important to do your research when planting any pollinators. However, this idea stemmed from a personal theory that the ladies and men who keep their gardens bright and colourful are more than doing their part to keep the bees going, whether they knew it or not. Flowers and trees and greenery should be celebrated in our towns and cities, so let’s protect them at all costs.
